Mortice and Tenon joints were the basis of traditional framing and remain well used today. These joints are nearly always secured with Oak Pegs.

The photographs above show a Mortice and Tenon joint being prepared; the first shows the timbers after the Mortice (the hole cut in the receiving timber) and Tenon have been cut in preparation for fitting. Note the chamfer on the Tenon to ease the assembly. Note also the peg hole drilled in the receiving timber.

Once the carpenter is satisfied with the fit between the two timbers (photograph two), a mark will be made with an offset-pricker, the joint dis-assembled and a peg hole drilled in the Tenon.

When the frame is finally raised, the joint will be secured by an Oak peg.
